You can do it. It's a useful skill for a musician to have. Even just a basic functional working knowledge of. And you'll have more stuff to work with now too.

On a vaguely related note, we went to pay the rent on The Snaxodrome today and I noted the building manager had an old '70s Yamaha mixing console (wood side panels and everything) sitting in one of the rooms off of his office, covered in dust with some cardboard on it, looking like it hadn't been touched in years. The Mackie 8 Bus in the room of course was all set up and ready to go and seems to be in current use, so... I should ask him how much he wants for the old Yamaha. Input and output transformers on the preamps; big toans to be had from the old Yamaha boards. Please sell this to me for peanuts.

I finally got my beginner's driving license... Now I first applied for it in 2003. So now in 2012 I have recieved a license with a picture of me when I was seventeen on it.

mine's still got me at 17 as well. I look like a completely different person, not really sure how it passes for a legit form of ID.

Mine has the 15 year old self on it.

I am coming to the conclusion that at the minute, I am really not a very good bass player. It's not my timing that's really the issue, it's more about picking consistency or something and compression only helps so much. Much harder work than I'd initially expected

How and where are you holding the pick?

This seems to be the issue for a lot of people. Particularly finger players, the timing really becomes an issue, I think because the actual process of plucking the string gets strenuous. I guess it all comes down to practice and muscle conditioning.

Same as I do a normal guitar pick and I'm not sure where I'm picking, wherever it feels comfortable. I've tried fingerstyle but that's even worse, every note is a different volume and it sounds bloody awful

Yarr, i play pickbass pretty much exactly like i play pick guitar(same pick and all), but i just kind of hit it harder.

Well it's a bit easier to pick consistently closer to the bridge as you can avoid the inherent floppiness of the strings' movement closer to the neck. Those big strings move a lot, and depending on how you are playing it is easy for the floppy movement to mess with you.

Mother of fuck, my acoustic (that I hardly play, for a reason) has the fucking most incredibly high action and fattest strings (12-56 or something like that in E) that I put on forever ago because ya know, I thought it was a good idea. Shit is like, impossible to play.

Tune it down to D standard or so.

Then maybe capo the thing at the third fret.

I have been finding lately that i most prefer using my acoustic when it is softer to play.

I used to like it all angried up with big strings, but not so much anymore.

yar for some reason my acoustic always has 12's on it as well. I'm no puny 9 guage guy (10-52) but the 12's do fuck with me....
