Devin? Chris? Anyone else who'd know this stuff?

This is not something I have a deep knowledge of. What's the quality shit? Cool productions, grooves, smrt lyrics (I am open to instrumental here as well). Looking for more "serious" stuff that's interesting to listen to vs. dance club stuff. Anyone? Tell me what I should be czeching out.

Well, "underground" compared to top 40 mainstream commercial stuff. Is "indie" a better term? Would that even apply? But yeah, that does seem to be the category of noises I am looking for. Your assistance in this matter is much appreciated. I have some listening to do, it seems.

There is a lot a lot a lot of stuff i like. Most of it is pretty well known, but it is definitely not so much top 40, unless top 40 has gotten better while i wasn't looking. I don't even know what the kids are calling this stuff these days but i guess 'indie' might be about right.

There are dozens of other things i could poast, but i realize i just poasted a large stack, and Dev will prolly have as much again to offer when he arrives.

I am sure i won't be able to resist poasting something else though, but for now i will restrain myself.

Listening back to the Jazzmatazz stuff now i am a lot less into it. At the time i was really into it though. I liked that they went and recorded the jazzdudes just to press it into vinyl to make beats from though. It has its moments. Really i just don't so much like the soulful lady balladsongs. I don't know if i even had those on my old tapes. I probably skipped them when i made the dubs.

As far as more commercially well-known shit, i have always loved the production style of the Cypress Hill stuff:



I just like where they go for samples. And they always have supernice bass samples.

Man, i really enjoy Cypress Hill a lot more than i should as a dood who doesn't smoke. Or own guns. And who is whiter than most printer paper.

For good hip-hop production I will always recommend just about anything Dan the Automator is involved with:

















The members of the Wu-Tang Clan do good stuff on their own as well, GZA is one of my favorites:

Oh, and for sure the Wu Tang stuff is classic. I especially enjoy the regular old 36 Chambers.

In general, i should also probably mention, i tend to lean towards cruddy sounding production in hip hop, basically the same as i lean with any other sounds, i like some crackle and some dissonance. That is why i dig the Dalek stuff so much, and the Viktor Vaughn/MF Doom stuff.

Actually most of the stuff I like comes from the late 90's and includes people somehow involved with the Gorillaz. This is not intentional but it happened.

I do remember that Unkle record from wheneveritwas that it came out, '90-something. I remember hearing some stuff off it, but that was... Well, when it was new.

I am definitely digging the Dälek stuff so far. I acquired the Cannibal Ox record Chris posted a track from as well. I suppose I'll make my way down the list.

Lots of names I know, but not really a lot of stuff I've heard (save for Wu-Tang and Cypress Hill) except in bits and pieces. A quick peek into Dan The Automator's discography reveals he produced the last couple Kasabian records, which I did not know. I like the sound of them.
