 Suitable materials for currency.
Tom's poast about Velcro in the effects forum reminded me...
A Velcro disc is referred to as a "Velcoin". I, of course, think this is a fabulous idea and that more coins should be made from Velcro.
Of course I support tungsten and Goddamn Brass as potential coinage materials. But what else should Cash Money be made from? Paper, copper, silver and gold are so passé.
Perhaps something awkward or even potentially hazardous to the bearer?

 Re: Suitable materials for currency.
Rai stones are fucking great.
In general, i feel that currency should either be:
1. Extremely unwieldy. 2. Extremely fragile. 3. Possibly actually posing a physical danger or health threat.
Or some combination of the three. Heavily radioactive materials, great big buildings, precariously balanced assemblages(which become null/void/useless if allowed to crumble/tumble/shatter/etc), that sort of thing.
Also, not really material related, but i do rather enjoy some ridiculously large numbers for prices, so whatever it is, i suggest that it be valued in such a fashion as very extremely large quantities of the stuff be required for even the smallest purchases.

 Re: Suitable materials for currency.
Sheets of strontium-90 sandwiched between razor-thin pieces of glass? That has the advantages of being awkward to transport, very fragile, potentially very pointy, and emits dangerous radiation. Laser-etch a portrait of Count von Zeppelin on there and yer good to go.
Perhaps some materials that oxidise rapidly and violently if exposed to air or water? So one denomination has to be transported in water, a vacuum or a noble gas environment, and another will burst into flames or explode if it gets wet. Metallic sodium and potassium could work here. Or metallic xenon, which can only exist under extreme amounts of pressure.

 Re: Suitable materials for currency.
That is what i am talking about.
If nothing else, it would make random wallmart clerks' job of checking bills for counterfeits, considerably more amusing for the spectator.

 Re: Suitable materials for currency.
2' x 3' sheets of corrugated tin, sharpened on three sides (not standardized) with an image of Ty Cobb produced by some sort of early photographic process (daguerreotype, tintype, etc.) valued at, say, one hundred pesos each. All one needs to do from there is standardize a value for the peso in terms of how much material goods ten thousand pesos can purchase. (Say, a bag of rice.)

 Re: Suitable materials for currency.
Butter would be fantastic. Especially, as it is prone to go rancid fairly quickly. Unpleasant odor is also a fine and desirable quality for a nation to have in its currency selection.
