Eventful times.

Well the people voted, and the results say that 56% want to change the status quo (PR not a colony). And out of the voters who chose in the second part 61% want PR to become the 51st state. The newly elected governor is part of the political party that favors PR as a colony so I'm expecting absolutely nothing to get done with regard to PR's status.

While I voted for a free state with ties to the US (similar to Canada and England/UK?), what I truly am against is the current status quo. Currently we have taxes and limitations on nearly everything. I wouldn't want to bore you with details but I could if you want me to. Basically right now, around half of the population is perfectly fine being second class citizens with full rights only while we live in the 50 states, no direct relations with other countries and no real control over our own economy. So yeah, either we are fully in our we are fully out. Enough of this "Commonwealth" bullshit, enough of thinking that we have to speak English to become a state.

In the end though, its the US Congress that decides our fate. While we can propose to become the 51st state, they have to decided to let us in. and if they get tired of our bullshit, they can drop us at a whim.

TL:DR We voted to change our status, but because the newly elected administration favors no change, they will just wipe their asses with it.

Can you imagine being a left leaning black Puerto Rican that smokes pot and lives in Colorado? For someone, it is such today.

Re: Puerto Rican statehood, it has to go through the US House of Representatives, which is currently controlled by the Republican party anyhow. PR would gain five representatives, two senators (and the resultant seven electoral votes), and is pretty much a guaranteed solid "blue" state given the Republicans' solid success at alienating and offending Spanish-speaking people. So, for the time being, it's a no-go here in The States proper as well.

You would be surprised. PR ranks tops in churches per square mile. I think that translates PR into becoming a swing state, but only because the GOP alienates everyone. Most of the pro-statehood party members are actually Republican. And then religion get so much in the way, against gay marriage but also against the death penalty. Latinos in general are chauvinistic, above average religious and generally right-winged thinking. If the Republicans get their head out of their ass, the Latino community would probably be mostly Republican.

I'm not really in favor of becoming a state, but anything is better then where we are right now. Personally I think the best short term solution is to redefine PR states, giving us a little more power to do whatever we want economically and then go on from there.

Plus the GOP is in desperate need of "the Latino vote", which might push them towards championing "Latino issues."

The GOP has to clean up the misogynist and racist image they have made for themselves in the past two elections, and helping PR become a state wouldn't be a bad state.

But the chances of that happening are not ... great.

We you compare the number of voters between those who said "Yes we like the Commonwealth" and those who voted pro-state you get 49%-51% spread (respectively).
