Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I am needing to re-think my approach to recording guitar tones, I think. I need more close mice in my life, I've gotten into this unintentional groove of finding tones outside of a mix without thinking about how much they're going to get lost with other elements in play. Things just sound weird to me with the mic crammed all up in the cabs face like that, but they begin to make sense with cymbals/snare fighting for the forefront.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
That's what the close mice are for. Yeah, they sound all weird and unnatural- who listens right up on the speaker? - on their own, but bring in stuff that captures the room effectively and then it starts to make a little more sense. You definitely have some leeway in how close is close, depending on how loud the thing is. Up on the grille/1 inch/2 inches/3/6 inches are all going to sound different. There's an approach to mixing drums that's pretty similar- try and get the majority of the drum sound happening in the overheads, and bring in the the close mice to reinforce what you think needs reinforcing in the mix.

You haz Shure SM58. With the impedence compensated getting a good tone with one Shure is soooo eaaaasy.
Also, those other dynamics you haz.

I gotta do that fuckin' cable dealie you've been talking about, you're right. Just jam the sumbitch in the grille and throw up all my condensers like I normally would..

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Yeah, the impedance thing really does change what a 57/58 are on about. I do it with the variable impedance on my ART at our place, or when we're at the big studio with the vintage stuff. I would have killed a man to know this ten-twelve years ago wondering why a 57 straight into an old Mackie desk sounding so damn tiny and aren't these things all over everything? It's still a big box o' midrange all up in your face, but it sounds a lot more like a real record, and they love being hit with volume and take to a grittier preamp nicely too.
I usually do a weird multi-mic thing with the close mics, and more often than not mic a single speaker. Occasionally Stephanie, with her Blue + Greenback, or Chris's old Marshall with the Weber Blues + Silvers (essentially high-wattage reproductions of old Vox and Fender speakers) get two different speakers mic'd (watch for phase!). I used to roll with KSM27 + Beta 58 mostly, the KSM on the dustcap and the Beta at a 45º angle coming in on the edge of the dustcap, and I thought that really captured what the guitars were doing really well even without the room mice. It sounded damn close to the amp. Usually 1-2" out, though I've stuffed the fuckers right into the grille before and have no problem doing so. I've been liking the plain ol' 57 again lately though, I don't know why. In combination with the NTK, usually, and primarily for distorted sounds where I don't feel I need the added thickness of a ribbon. Positioning is roughly the same.
But yeah, you gotta do the impedance thing or basically every other mic will sound better, certainly for the vibe you go for. Czech the specs on yer TL Audio pre if you want to use that on guitars- where I suspect it would excel. The cable mod is stupid cheap, but the whole premise being that said cable is compensating for the input of the target preamp...

I have a strange desire for mozzarella sticks and seasoned fries. I have no idea why. I desire greasy junk food at the moment. This is not stuff I have that often or have kicking around. I am neither shitfaced nor pregnant .

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
So there's this hipster burger joint called 'The Burger's Priest' that has eluded me for the entire year we have lived here. They opened when we moved in and the lineups were all the way out into the street, so I didn't bother. On my birthday I was like, "yay, I will have one of these hyped burgers" and went there drunk only to find that they only take cash once I'd gotten through the lineup... and stormed out frustrated and had curry instead. Last night the lineup wasn't so intense and cash was obtained and finally I tried this hamburger. It was pretty okay. Not a huge deal. Stupid hype.
There's a Five Guys down on Dundas now. I will have to hit them up next...

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Ugh back to Boston tomorrow for another gig. New venue for us, Ned Devine's Parris. New female singer id doing 6 songs and we have a veteran hottie filling in the other female songs. Also my first gig as only guitar and keys. (i do both on some songs and medleys) had to cram the VH solo in Beat It this week, feel good about it. VH is not really my style, but the band was real impressed the other night during practice so I guess I got it down. Staying over in Boston so getting wrecked is on the agenda.

I can see it and it is doap. I wish that type of drums felt a little more real for me to play, as they would be an excellent solution to how fucking loud my realdrums are. I mean, aside from the fact that the nice ones are fuckspensive.

You have no idea how badly watching this make made me wish I still had a death metal band. Largely, because that was fucking awesome.

It is kinda fucked up, feeling and being like a little kid and an old man at the same time. But yet, it is kind of awesome.. In some of the most disadvantageously righteous ways. Weird day/life, yo.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I get it, probably in quite different ways, but I get it. I've never quite shaken the not feeling like a grown-up with some people, in a bad way. I feel that way with my band, like they're 40 and I'm 16. It's not that big an age gap, and no real generation gap at all (as I am not 16 and haven't been for...) but for whatever reason...? Oddly I do not feel this way with my parents, who are much older than my bandmates. I've always felt like "a kid"- in the bad way- at work, too- even when I was working with people younger than I was. That actually got worse as I got older- after having a career somewhere and earning some respect and doing the Respectable Adult thing, starting over after having said fuckit, I want to live the rock-and-roll life again instead seeing how far doing What I Was Supposed To Do got me. Meanwhile these kids are... Well, doing the things I lived and found wanting, and may it work for them, and they have seniority over me as I'm now the New Guy and they were hired fresh outta college. And I feel like the child. Life is weird like that sometimes. And sometimes in those sometimes, what I wouldn't give for the attitude of a grizzled old sergeant major telling his young lieutenant what for. Confrontational, I am not.
