I put a quick 1/2 drunk demo of the 11Rack up in the N Something D thread.

Did some tracks for Cam as well, he asked for raunch so I did that. even left a little slop in it.

I like characterful takes/knowing most of this record was recorded intoxicated by most all parties involved. :huzzah:

PT looks so confusing and terrifying to me, DNW.

I don't think I'd even think of going with PT until my recording setup was about the 2x the current Cam-sized setup.

Pro Tools is shit, I can't stand it. So far I've only found it useful for 5.1 mixing and ADR. Much prefer Reaper for anything musical.

It's snowing today and I'm not in the mood for it. Nigga I got shit to do today  :red:

Post Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Recorded a garage rock band today I have befriended through one of my oldest homies, they're coming back tomorrow to track more. Might keep some of the two takes of the 8 songs we recorded today. Shit is kinda fucking sick. :huzzah: Had some tech issues that I have been kinda been dreading as of late, though it came in another form. Whilst tracking with 10 and then 11 mice I had some problems with the computer tracking extended takes..

Thing is, I am trying to find a way to beef up this little Mac to more easily handle what's being thrown at it. One of the band members mentioned to me a mod he was told about where people remove their CD drives and have SS HDs installed in there, kinda gnar. I feel like maybe an external HD would be a better idea. I know too little about computers and the way they work, but I feel like providing my computer with more storage capability would really help, yarr? Anyways, what HDs would you dooders recommend? Brand/size.

Internal SSD would be the fastest platform you could record tracks too, IIRC. An External SSD might be faster than your internal HDD, but it would be connected via Usb(2.0?) so make sure to do your research on if it actually would be.

If you can save up ~$1000 - $1500 you can get someone to build you a more powerful PC desktop with an internal SSD, if you can get ~$2000 (depending on the screen size) you can get a more powerful new iMac.

Evidently you can get the 2.9Ghz 21.5" iMac with a 3.1Ghz i7 processor and their "Fusion SSD Drive" that is 1tb for ~$2000. That computer should serve you well enough for quite some time.

Recording to the internal drive on a laptop is a crapshoot. I can tell you you should have at least a 7200 RPM drive for recording; the drive is what yer running into, not the power of the system to handle it.

Yargh, I figured it'd be the drive, as I know my processor is a pretty beefy muh fucka. I'd rather not get another/different computer. I am really into how portable this fucker is, so I figure I will just get a nice external HD.

Oh wait you just got that laptop right?

For some reason I thought you were still working on an older iMac.

Yeah an external drive would be best regardless, cause laptops be fragile yo. The faster the drive the better if you are getting choked up.

If you only have one drive in your laptop DO NOT RECORD TO IT.

This is a "basic fact, do not fuck with it" sort of thing. It is too much physical work for a small format(e.g. 2.5" laptop) hard drive to be reading information from the operating system, and writing information from the DAW. The drive will overheat, and the drive will fail. Not an if, but a when. There is no way to get around how bad an idea recording to the system drive is in a laptop.

As for drive manufacturers, the only one that has not really fucked me over over the years has been Western Digital. As a second choice i would go for a Seagate. NEVER buy a "green" or efficient drive, they are designed to go to sleep when they decide they are not being used enough, and it can fuck up a recoarding setup like nobodies business, generally by desyncing the firewire/interface connection in the middle of a take.

In looking at drives, don't buy the cheapest ones, unless you are buying two and running a RAID setup. Go for the middle of the line shit. Make absolute sure that you never buy anything slower than 7200rpm also. Luckily, the 7200+ rpm drives are generally middle range ones anyhow.

Stay the fuck away from Maxtor, Samsung, Hitachi, HGST(Hitachi under a new name, now owned by WD, but still fucking Hitachi).
