Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
Now that I am actually on a fucking computer:
Listening again, cymbals really do sound lovely here. And more importantly, they are not fuckloud even though I have a bad tendency to wail on the fuckers.. I think this ride is good for softer stuff like this, anyhow.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
https://soundcloud.com/cameron-heck/roc ... eetarz-forCaptured some riffing today to get more comfortable with capturing big rawk tones. Really into the tones I managed, and I remember pretty much exactly what it took to get there. Dat palm mute section is sort of a sloppy mess doe.. Kinda was hoping I could just simultaneously knock out guitars for this song. I should probably play/practice guitar a whole lot more.

I dunno if it's just cause the way I write bass parts and I'm confusing myself, but this combo of bass and amp remind me of the tone on Monument To Thieves. https://soundcloud.com/cameron-heck/bass-tone-test

Gnar dude. I suppose the mandolin is a western instrument, but it's interesting how easily it can sound oriental. Not saying it necessarily does here, though I did feel like I detected flavours of it.

Disregard the last post. My brain and smartphones can't be trusted. But I totally feel you on the Eastern sound. It is so fantastically droney and the tuning provides some weird voicings..

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
Yeah, that is some pretty fucked sounding drums. I want to hear that snare sampled and used for industrial beats. BOOM. PFFFT. BOOM. PFFFT.

If there is a way to go wrong with distorted drums, i don't haven't met it yet.

Not done by a good amount, but this one is developing nicely. https://soundcloud.com/cameron-heck/man ... ut-stringsAnd, and now this is done as well besides Snax-O's friends' fiddle playing: https://soundcloud.com/cameron-heck/man ... out-fiddle

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
Holy fuck, this thing is sloppy as all motherfuck. But parts of the production sound kind of awesome and it was mainly for that purpose/figuring out a structure for this thing. Which I didn't fully manage, as there's that awkward funeral dirge of chaos in the middle. https://soundcloud.com/cameron-heck/hol ... y-mm-coverThese are not my drums, BTW. They belong to this band, The Deep Fried, I have been recording. Setup kinda fucked with my brain. Recordings of their stuff will be shared as well.. Gotta work on some decent mixes of that stuff here in a bit.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
https://soundcloud.com/cameron-heck/luc ... x-thus-farThe new industrial freakout came about by accident. Thinger probably needs keyboards or something else still, but I like where it's headed.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
The scream at the beginning sounded sorta like Trent Reznor. What the fuck did you do to get these sounds? This is all sorts of violent. The guitar sound in the middle is jacked up. I love the DM growls over the major key stuff. This is so jacked-up sounding!

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
All the synth sounding shit is me playing my bass through my little Fender combo blasting and recording it with the internal laptop mic of my Mac, shit clips into that gnar sound (though I am admittedly abusing the fuck out of it with unnatural EQ boosts). All vocals are SM58 with tubes maxxed on the PA-2. Different things are getting crusted with the stock Apple distortion toys that I assume come with garageband. Lots of KSM27s on the drums being crushed like the vocals. I love how little steady tempo is going on in what is almost a dance track.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
One of my favorite things that you have recorded. Many good noises, and i like the crunching plod of pace to it. It would segue nicely into something more tightly refined, methinks.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
Thank ya, dooder! I agree on the bit about going into something a bit more tightened up and "pro" sounding. Also, I should add some of this stuff is just sorta happy accidents. Bass input shorting out in certain parts that perfectly led me into the next part and whatnot.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
Sometimes that's the best stuff. Some of my favorite random things I've recorded have been broken or glitchy gear.
Do you have a running order planned out for this stuff, ie. what songs are going where?

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
I currently have one that I am messing with and always changing. At the moment, I've got a little over half an hour of material I want to use.
