Keepin' it lean.

My floor tom is one of those rack toms. Ha!

Felt like photographing and sharing my kit after being pleased at how I could mount the 14" on the same stand as my ride.

Not too dissimilar in setup than my drummer's kit. :nods: The angles, of course, are different, as is the positioning and the fact he has a third crash most of the time and a Roland SPD-S besides with a single kick pedal. (And they're gigantic and tuned really low.) You don't need much to be a badass, and for the most part, when I see shows, at least local ones, and the drummer is rocking a four-piece regardless of the amount of cymbals, I expect him (or, sometimes, her- female drummer = awesome.) to kick way more ass than the guy with the monsterkit. The additional cymbals I get- to me, they're like effect pedals.

Honestly, what the fuck @ that bottom kit. I just don't believe anybody needs that many fucking toms. :red: Anything past three and it's probably time to GTFO of my world. Or ya know, i will berate you for being a jackass, AND CLEARLY NOBODY WANTS THAT.

I can see four, with the two floors- a fairly classic slightly-larger-than-average setup. Really only useful for a certain sort of fill in heavier styles though. People who actually make use of that are few and far between. Peart, I suppose- he at least uses all the shit on his kit to good effect and is much less wanky than his image- he's rather tasteful and suits the band. Nicko McBrain, who has one of the best names in rock-and-roll, with his four thousand toms... That's his schtick, and they're not all there in the studio; it's a prop. And those guys are ancient as far as rawk is concerned, or, at least, medieval.

Dude from Future Of The Left, when I saw them- I don't even know if he had a ride cymbal- he may have just had two crashes; I don't remember. Dude kicks ass.

There is some truth to "if you can't rock it on a four-piece..." (I have no beef with the double kick; I understand its physical utility over a double pedal for the metalstuff.)

I should have clarified, I meant three rack toms. That plus a floor or maybe even two, I get that. But five rack toms? At what is obviously not a stadium? GTFO, brah.

He works because he's tasteful and doesn't overplay in context. Did I ever poast the drums from Tom Sawyer? It's a good listen. Sent it to a bunch of friends with Bonham for comparison to show the different styles and the subtleties.

My drummer is trying to secure us the local opener slot for Peter Murphy doing an evening of Bauhaus t00ns. :nods: That would be amazing.

If I didn't, which I don't think I did, it's an interesting listen:

A lot more 'verb on the snare than you'd expect, where everything else sounds bone-dry. I remember him saying it's more challenging to play than it sounds because he has to keep the hats/ride completely consistent/constant through the whole thing with all the rest going on, or something to that effect. Makes me think of Dave Lombardo (another beast of a drummer and shockingly tasteful) and how he just whales on that ride.

Peart was always a bit too clean for me. He is massively skilled, but i just have never really gotten that into his style.

I was able to science up a repair for my old flatscreen monitor that i bought in like 2004 and which then died in like 2005. Its disapointing longevity has been a thorn in my side since that time. I now emerge victorious.

Having a second screens' worth of pixels available is right swell for mixing. Very nice to just leave the one of them as a mixer, and to still be able to see all of the waveforms on the other.

The only thing that would make it better is if it was a higher quality monitor to begin with, so that i might be able to get the color/contrast a bit closer to the screen on my Asus which i find actually quite pleasant to work on. When i bought this old screen though the pickins' were a wee bit slimmer and the prices for actually nice ones were fairly exorbitant. Still, for $2 worth of caps and ten minutes of soldering, having the extra display pixels really is a good scene.

I wouldn't go back to having a single display for a work computer unless I had to. It's great for graphicstuff too. We actually have three running at the 'drome as of a couple weeks ago; Chris (not you obviously) brought another graphics card and another monitor acquired from stuff they were getting rid of at work, and there's now a spaceship-looking thing taking up the whole of the desk with the monitors (speakers) barely not-falling-off. We record all the rehearsals, and the current setup there is on a PC with Nuendo, whose layout is wonky to me vs. Logic or PT. So we have one giant thing running across two monitors for the recording and the mixer on a separate monitor. At home, my dual-monitor setup is split-level, with the one being at keyboard height. I don't have a proper desk, but rather a coffee table with my keyboard and one of my keyboards and a bit I boosted from a desk someone was throwing out that puts my monitors and monitors at the proper level (and speaker stands for the alternate monitors). The second monitor (visual) sits next to my Novation synth that I use as a controller.

It occurs to me- and I just measured- if I took out some of the shelving bits from the middle I could mount 19" rack units on either side of the acquired desk bit. I'd lose a bit of storage, but it wouldn't even be that much work. Why it matters, I don't know, as I have a whole goddamn server rack immediately to the right of this whole makeshift setup, but... :idk:

THANK YOU. God damn, it seems like I only meet Rush haters these days. And in Toronto of all places.

Rush fucking rock.

Peart: Agree, he can use any size kit he wants. He will use every piece on the kit and never be hokey. I have seen Rush, 7 or 8 times. Astounds me everytime.

Yarr, unbuilding any amp is a total dick. Transformers are especially bullshit because they would normally go in before pretty much everything else, so to take them out of a built amp, you have to untangle them out from under... everything else. The last transformer job i had to do, i wound up gutting the amp and building anew one instead with the new trannies. :red: After the first time i replaced trannies in another built amp, i just didn't have that type of patience for round two.

Yup. It mounts right under the main board. Even removing all the pots from the chassis barely affords me enough room to get in to remove the bolts. It is my favouritest amp ever though so its worth the effort.

:huzzah:

That is a pretty cool place from what I can tell. Lots of fantastic metal bands, IMO, from that area.

Heading down to That London this afternoon to see The Book Of Mormon. I confess, I don't think I know enough about it to get all the jokes, but I'm sure it'll be a fun day anyway. After that we're out on the piss so I'm gonna have a good time regardless  Where the posh easy girls at? :red:
