Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
Since Landon brought his Cobras home I have been working on my hands a lot. My blasts are getting blasty-ish. D112 and KSM as OH. https://soundcloud.com/cameron-heck/blastbeatsYou can hear me grabbing some 5As and talking to myself in the beginning. I pretty much just play with 2Bs and these Danny Carrey sig sticks that like between a 5A and 2B and have this groove in them, so these helped me speed up a good deal.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
I like the distorted vocals and trashy low-fi drums against the very clear and present mandolin. You're developing a very interesting style.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
I am thinking the mandolin needs to come down a bit in the mix, but I was definitely trying to bury the vocals (which now obviously need to be remixed a bit, IMO). There's also an acoustic guitar in that needs to come up a bit, though it is just mimicking the mando. I am also not too happy with either of the bass tones I have managed yet, either. This little Fender combo sounds cool for some stuff, but I am looking for something more gargantuan and hi-fi, I am thinking. Which means I just need to go out and get a cab for this fuckin' thing, OR. Convert the Line 6 4x12 I am inheriting into a bass cab by way of new speakers. Ah, but thank ya, mayne.

Shit yeah, far as I know. I've been busy and she has a weird work schedule. Can you send me a download link to the new version? I like how it's come along.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
The bass toan works in context. I don't know what you're going for, but it's probably not Steve Harris or Bootsy or anything, and works with the sound of the track. What did you do to get the bass sound, anyhow? Also, Fender combo? Are you running the bass head into the 2x10, or are we referring to a different amp? I haven't spent much time with 12s on bass, but some people do like them very much. I wouldn't even know what to recommend for 12s- EVs, or PA speakers, or someone probably makes a purpose-designed 12" bass driver. Avatar probably has something on their site. K100s or something like that, too? No clue. None. Well, except what I mentioned above. What's in the Line 6 cab anyhow? If it has something flat and full-range, what with going with modeling maps and all, it might- just might- be fine. Or it could be something middling and shitty; I don't know what they put in their cabs.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
Bass amp is a little 30 watt Fender practice amp I have had for a long time that entered my possession like, 5 years ago or some shit. 8" speaker or something, largely it is this room making the amp sound cool and interesting. Not that the amp sounds shit or anything, it is just ya know. An 8" speaker. Not too much super highs or lows, but it makes a cool sound for sure. It was M179 a foot out and R40 ribbon 3 feet out. I have no idea what is in the Line 6 either, nor the wattage of the cab.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
Random stuff like that is useful to have around. Sometimes it's the right sound. It might actually be cheaper to find a cool bass cab on CL than re-speaker the 4x12. I know that amp's an assload of watts, but it's SS power ( ? ) so does one treat it like PA gear and run it into a cab with a lesser wattage rating? I really don't know on that score, though I really should. Cab choices are obvious- the better SWR and GK stuff, Ampeg, Mesa... I can't speak for the weird modern boutiquey bass cabs, as the sorts of bands I like don't use them.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
Sometimes, it becomes very obvious I grew up listening to a lot of NIN. https://soundcloud.com/cameron-heck/apple-dabsWrote the little riff thing last night, recorded/wrote the rest this morning.

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
Awesome. Is that a fucking kazoo? The new NIN lineup with Belew, that's a Band Field Trip to see. With my roommate (she's a big Crimson fan, too) and a few others. I'm reminded of Somewhat Damaged. Which is a killer song. You somehow manage to combine folk-punk with industrial and grindcore. What the hell, man?

Re: A Barely Scientific Microphone Test
That is me making weird, buzzing lip noises with an M179 set to omni out a foot or so in front of me. I then spanked the fuck out of that with some compression and hit it with this Apple distortion plugin I am always using on stuff. Guitars are the same thing, I can imagine the bass will experience a similar treatment. It is basically me indeed ripping Somewhat Damaged (this thing has lived in a few different forms), it was saved into my reaper stuff as "SD song". I am probably going to continue to build throughout the day, though I am tracking guitars and whatnot for some other things, or am atleast trying.
