I do prefer African elephants to asian. They are more bigger.

I think it's great that our planet has more than one type of elephant though.

They really should clone some mammoths already. Giant sloths too. Fuck, bring it all back! Retro mammalia.

The lack of megafauna saddens me. It would certainly make things more interesting.

Re: giant sloths, my housemate informs me it was possible the giant ground sloth still existed in Cuba when the Spanish figured out The Americas were there for the pillaging. :nods: There were certainly mammoths in Siberia when the Egyptians built the pyramids, but this is much more recenter, like. And there used to be elephants and rhinos all over the place, all sorts of 'em. We need these back. Why? Because I say so.

Electron microscope.

Quote:
the phonograph always struck me as such a Flintstones technology that it was remarkable that it worked at all.

The original Edison machine had a clockwork motor and no speakers or amplification and used rather common materials.

It almost could have been invented by Leonardo DaVinci or even Archimedes.

Edison was a hack. If Telsa had gotten deeper involved in recording we would be sitting here listening in 3D Color sound right now.

Hard to mess with a proper orchestra. I would like to hear the sound of this in person, rather than what seems to be a studio overdub mix. Probably still sounded crazy. Foalks are so used to electrobands, i think they forget how fucking massive a full acoustic orchestra is/was, sonically.

They are a pretty awe-inspiring thing to hear, and of course the mix is always good. If you're only used to hearing a canned string section in a soundtrack or something and have never heard one IRL... Needs moar bassists though. A full section of bowed bass can shake a room.

Also, I am reminded Beethoven is like the AC/DC of classical composers. I once read that Beethoven has "all the subtlety of a sucker punch" and to be fair, that's probably true. A master melodist and arranger, though, because we still know the tunes two hundred years, give or take, later. You figure what, 5th Symphony, first movement, opening theme; 9th Symphony, fourth movement- the main choir bit; theme from Für Elise; Moonlight Sonata, first movement, main theme; are inescapable artifacts of western culture, even if you don't know a damn thing about classical music, never did and never will.

I have a soft spot for Beethoven, though he's not my favorite composer, because hearing the 7th Symphony at a young age made music my first and forever love. He's also an archetypical mad genius, which always earns points in my book.

It makes me ponder, at this late hour, imagine if da Vinci had invented the phonograph- he really could have; it's not that complicated a technology and all the material was there. Yeah, I've got Beethoven's first album... He was, after all, a boss of a piano player, one of the best, before he stopped touring 'cause of hearing loss, and then just wrote.

Who do I have to kill to get my time machine to go see some shows?

Yeah I thought it was a fun idea for a music vid. It's a part 2 as well, another one of their videos is part 1 which shows what the blue thing is. Good song/band as well.

I don't believe I've poasted this one before; apparently it's owned by a studio in Nashville. It's an original Neumann from the '30s made for a special customer; note the finish and badge:

Apparently it's a really good mic, too. Though I can see people having serious negative vibes from it...

What kinda crazy d00d decides it's a good idea to slap a Nat-zi emblem on a mic? I mean, it's not necessarily a bad idea, but not a good one. :red:
