 Re: The Chris Thread The German government at the time?  Like I said, original from way back in the day. Someone must have, er, liberated it after WWII, and now it's in a studio. I have heard Tool used it as a vocal mic, but I don't know if that's true. Probably worth a fortune.

Re: The Chris Thread Ironically, that's specifically why they chose the Neumann CMV3. Well, it was also German-made, but the condenser mic was a new technology and sounded crisper, clearer, cleaner etc. than what they had kicking about at the time. It's the immediate ancestor of the classic Neumann vocal mics.
Someone apparently nicked one and brought it home, and now it makes rock-and-roll instead of fascism.
I wonder how often it gets used on sessions? I forget what studio has it... I could see that having serious negative mojo. Personally, I would find a reason to use it on something, as a big "fuck you" to the original owners, who would not have liked me very much.
