Yeah, I sorta see a little parallel between them. By a little, I mean a lot. Both are massive gearheads and I do believe Mr. Ballou at least tracks to tape on occasion as well. They seem to have a similar sort of aesthetic.
The 57 does work on a snare drum for the same reason it works on a distorted electric guitar- it's a frequency thing. But you are correct re: the bleed. My one friend has a Beta 57 and likes it on snare, and I get the impression it is to the 57 what the Beta 58 is to the 58- brighter top, tighter pattern. I liked the i5 when I've tried it. I like a bigass condenser- prefer it most of the time- but I get the impression it's best with a more minimal setup. Next time I do a bigstudio drumsession with a killer mic locker, I am micing the kit all on my lonesome, how I want it done. I have ideas. (That I intend on experimenting with beforehand with lesser gear as proof of concept.)

Typed up a reply about my opinion of Heil LDDs on snare (like, but not love) and how badass an M179 in partial figure 8 is for that purpose, my need to go back to using a top mic in conjunction with my usual setup, and how effective even shitty homemade baffling is, yaddayaddayadda and then my internet did not want to post it.
Too tired to re-write that shit. Woke up at fuggin' 4:30 this morning for work so that the perpetual solar rays of hate would be minimized for a chunk of the day. DOING IT AGAIN TOMORROW, OH FUCK YEAH.

Really, I just want a magical device that makes every snare sound like Brendan Canty's on record.

You pull some good sounds from that shit. I think yer on the right track. I think it helps that you aren't coming from a live sound background either. And that you're starting young and not some boring set-in-your-ways bar soundguy (which is different from a sound engineer). You bought the right gear and have the right attitude/approach.
I'd really like to spend some time with an M179 myself rather than just going by what I hear from clips or what people say, because it seems like the no. 1 biggest bang-for-buck LDC out there at this point, just in terms of what it does. Those Shures sound killer, but they're cardioid-only. My Rode NTK sounds slick as fuck, but again, cardioid only and it's definitely a colored sound- it's big popvocal. But you're married to that sound. The M179s are pretty neutral and they have all the pattern adjustments.

I like to think I am getting pretty decent at it, though it is mad helpful that I have a way dopeass room.
I have been thinking a lot lately: I need to get on that top snare mic game real bad. I used to not much like the sound of it, but that was before I had enough mics to really play with having two snare mics in combination with each other. I am logisticizing (yes, logisticizing) that a PR40 on top fairly close and perpendicular to the head and an M179 in partial figure 8 on the shell as previously mentioned would be righteous as fuck and massive sounding. Listening through my recordings, I feel the snare sounds lack some of that almost.. fake-y giant impact recordings I like have.

I actually pulled a bunch of lyrics/vocal patterns out of my ass sort of like whatever this is tonight. Lyrics to one of our songs:
INDUCED PHOTOEVAPORATION
Seeking to disturb celestial bodies 0:27 Bombarding satellites that depend Upon the radiance of their star Scorching beyond recognition
The fusion taking place within 00:47 The heart of a star goes into Overdrive and massive energy Is released with fatal consequences
Sabotaging 1:07 Solar sys - tems
Enemies eradicated 1:21 Without warning No life shall remain There is no one mourning Them 1:32
Sudden onslaught of heat and energy 2:21 Reaches their world Vaporizing oceans and Blasting the atmosphere Into space 2:33
All lifeforms are subject to the massive destruction 3:00 Boiled or steamed alive they cannot escape their angry sun Taking shelter only prolongs the pain that is inflicted Twisted metal is the only sign that life ever existed
Immolation of a planet achieved with utmost efficiency 3:58
It's by no means fine poetry but it suits the theme and sounds good with the song.
Off on holiday tomorrow to the lovely resort of Kavos on the isle of Corfu pretty much drinking in the sun/swimming pool every day for a week. Its gonna be fun

Hay, isn't daytime like 20 hours where you are? Or am I just ignorant?
Had the first jam with Human Compost yesterday. It is fun having no responsibilities to an instrument. Being a vocalist rocks! The only thing is that I am an introvert, so naturally I have to be wasted to act like a front person.
The entire band is hung over. I don't remember the subway journey. I upchucked onto a bush during the last leg of my journey home.

It is closer to 22 hours.

Quality work there. I remember once in my younger years when I still lived with my folks, who live like 20 miles outside the city, taking a public bus to work in the city after being massively hung over- I'd had like ten glasses of red wine. I got out in front of the baseball stadium and immediately went to the nearest trash barrel to ralph.
And yes, being a vocalist does rock, and it frees you up to do other things. I am quiet and introverted by nature, but I've also been onstage all my life so I'm used to it. I still get nervous though, at least until halfway through the first song. Granted I have to play guitar or keys most of the time.

I myself, function best as a solely vocal dude. I am certainly no introvert (with notably strong exceptions) and have little shame about acting a rambunctious jackass. I am real excited as a couple of my friends and I are going to start playing local shows upon my return, in the form of a superpissed hardcore band. I will be assuming the role of vocals only frontman, so I am pretty stoked for that.
Every goddamned time I shave my face, I am reminded of why I just let the shit go wild. What a retarded, time consuming process. Especially shaving the neck. Not cool, bro.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I could pull off the vocal thing a lot better than the beard thing. The latter wouldn't suit my image anyhow. I would be fine with taking as limited an instrumental role as I could get away with if I could acquire proper hirelings for live work and just play the odd bit of weirdguitar and my apeshit-solos. Being a vocalist is fun. I've even offered my metalhead friend the lead guitar position if we had somewhere to rehearse my solo stuff. He can take all my solos. He'd play them note-for-note, too, because he's like that.
On an unrelated note, fuck CL spammers. I am not entirely sure what they hope to accomplish save for getting your email address to hack and spam other people to get their email addresses. Presumably with ads for Viagra or something. I am half-tempted to spam them back, perhaps with a Nigerian Scam or similar. Either that or start hitting on them and invite them over for a threesome.
