Honestly, having grown up with hardware drum machines, EZD sounded pretty killer to me when I first got it- a vast improvement over what fake-realdrums used to sound like. And it is tweakable to an extent, and there's some good sounding expansions as well. I do still use it for the more fucked-up expansions (Claustrophobic, Electronic, Twisted Kit). I'm betting even with the stock library you could get it pretty rockin' with enough time spent.

If you could export a MIDI file for the drums when you're done writing it and post or send it, I could drop it into SD2 or whatever else and bounce it down? I can't guarantee it'll sound better to your taste, but I do have an awful lot of fakedrum software.

I recall there being a decent looking open source/free drum vsti come out recently. Can't remember the name though :/

For example, for his instrumental post-rock band he used a square-shaft screwdriver as a sort of violin/cello bow. He brought in the "bow" to use on an Epi Sheraton through a Twin RI using our fantastic Earthquaker Devices demo-board we have in the store. It was pretty fucking cool sounding. Basically a ghetto rigged Ebow.
