But i think they should maybe have edited it down to about 30-40 min. Just seems to have a bit of extra meandering blah in between some solid sounds.

Reminds me a bit of the 90s, like Helmet crossed with Failure.

Concurred. The jammy bits are a bit tiresome. The rawking bits are some good violence, though.

This is interesting:

:idk: Kurt Cobain preferred Butch Vig's mixes to Andy Wallace's mixes, in retrospect. It might just be because I'm so used to the other one having heard it for the past twenty-some years now, but I kinda like this better too. It seems meaner. Also:

Steve Albini wrote:
While we were working on In Utero, the band would occasionally play other recordings of theirs in the control room for reference, or when trying to describe a part to one another. They had a cassette of the rough (Butch) mix of Nevermind, and it sounded maybe 200 times more ass-kicking than what I remember of the released version.

Make no mistake about it, Butch Vig was an excellent engineer and had a good, sympathetic relationship with all the noisy bands he recorded in the 80s. Those Killdozer, Appliances and Laughing Hyenas records all sounded fantastic and suited the bands perfectly. This version sounded like that, and that was obviously why they wanted to work with him.

From what I gather, they were kinda burnt from working on the thing, didn't like the direction the mixes were going, and passed it off to someone else. They chose Andy Wallace because he'd mixed Slayer.

Also, that Classic Albums episode is ace. :tu: And that is some damnfine harmonization. Their voices worked well together.

This again. Because it's awesome. I like it better than The Seer. To be fair, The Seer's probably my least favorite of the three Swans records since they reformed, despite the fact everyone else loves the hell out of it.

Nice use of the pedal steel on this.

Finally getting around to that one now.

I really enjoy the fashion in which this band does not fuck around. They make all the noises.

:nods: They do employ just about every sort of noisemaker they can get their hands/feet/moufs on, and cover a lot of stylistic ground with them. Also, they pull off the long form quite well. Most folks don't write ten minute songs that are interesting, let alone a two hour album worth of them. With vibraphones and harpsichords and brass, random homemade stuff, sludge metal guitar, whatever happens to be kicking around. In the wrong hands, all of that could easily turn into a shitty jam band with a penchant for minor keys.

I hadn't heard this one yet. I liked the hell out of Veneer though. I enjoy his angle.

Kind of nick drake-y, minus a lot of the overt self-distaste/depression elements that makes an extended bit of nick drake-ing a bit of a thing that i have to be in the mood for.

yeah-- i agree. i think that JG came out of the punk rock fold rather than the 60's middle class really makes his sensibilities a little less mopey and a lot more realizable to the likes of m'self, and clearly yourself! not to say i don't love the shit out of nick drake... i do.. but there's a sorta simmering irkedness at the stupidity of modern culture and a definite lack of tweeness going on with these jose gonzalez records. but it's not overtly angry. i totally get that, and it's seeming like a more sensible response in my 40's than full bore explosion in some ways.

sometimes i hear noise rock anymore and i can revel in it.. but it sometimes feels more dinosaury and atavistic. not saying always-- just sometimes. but i guess it's like anything-- different responses for different sitches.. and my current response seems like this over u.s. maple.. :D
