 Re: The Chris Thread
The whole occasional thing with academics studying hip hop bugs me in a way I can't put into words. Like when some music major starts telling you about all the crazy rhythmic divisions rappers use when they say inane things to a beat. I feel like they are trying to be ironic by digging for value in music that lacks value. It might be because I'm just prejudiced against rap music. Or maybe people are posers. Anyway flame away if you don't like it, I'm aware that my opinion is probably broken.

 Re: The Chris Thread
Architeuthis is a reasonable candidate. Australia is too far north(!) for Mesonychoteuthis, or "colossal squid" which live in Antarctic waters. Architeuthis is actually longer, while Mesonychoteuthis, is, at least theoretically, heavier and has a larger body. 'S the right area, and the depth is right. I don't know how well the transmitter would have survived being masticated by a squid beak though. But a large adult giant squid is big enough, and the shark in question is small enough, it totally could have snacked on it. I'd prefer this were the case, of all the options. As it is clearly the best option.
However, a larger white shark is at least as likely. Nine feet is not large for a white shark; it could easily have been eaten by a shark twice its length. Also, orcas and sperm whales could do the trick, and would if given the chance. Orcas in particular prey on the white shark.
Giant squid makes for a better story though.
