Just got another pair of the Senn HD201s. Man, it is weird how much more i like these things than the HD280s. Fucking $20 headphones. They are lighter in weight, way more detailed on the top end, and actually, not as bass-light as they seem at first.

Mainly i got the 2nd pair though, as my first pair is tied up, strapped to my TrackIR clone thing(which makes the use of them for anything but motion capture, kind of obnoxious) with like a dozen cable ties that i don't want to continually be cutting and replacing.

The end result of which has been that i have been using the HD280s for recording, and i kind of hate them for it. For one they are weirdly heavier and prone to sliding off via their own weight/momentum, especially for drumstuff. It has also been impossible for me to get the one ear off in that *just* correct manner, to be able to hear the backing and my own painful yodeling at the same time and in the correct ratios. This and i was surprised to find that their having the cord come off of just one side of the phones(versus the 201s coming off each side and meeting in a standard oldschool "V" in the middle) to be super uncomfortable to work with when drums or a guitar need to be routed around with said cord.

All in all, HD280s, nice, but weirdly, the cheapo HD201s kick the shit out of them in every way other than low end reproduction. :idk:

I remember dan saying i might very well find it so, and well, the man was correct. :huzzah:

$24 shipped, everyone should have them.

ALWAYS glad to see something inexpensive work out well! :D FWIW, i really don't get what they were doing with the eq on the 280's.. sennheiser mistakenly put the midrange back in the 201's that they sucked out of the x80 series, and they sell them cheap because they figure it's an error..

it's funny how even keel those cheapies are-- chris-- another super badass super cheapie are these: http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Ears-Noi ... SCZQBBNY9Q granted, you can't have other people use 'em 'cause they're in ears.. but they're great nonetheless.

stupid how good these things are for $14- and they solidly, in my ears, trounce even the 201s with better isolation (!). ue makes good stuff-- i have a pair of the ue500's too, which are the fancy-fied version of the 200's, and they're fantastic-- sound a lot the same with bigger bottom. i use 'em when i have to monitor in room with a band.. which is to say.. any time i record.. :D

stoked that they work out.. i have 2 pairs i keep around for recording too, 'cause i don't wanna share my beyers or my grados. :D

Boy, it's been a hell of a weekend...

Booked off Friday and today so me and some friends could see New York Death Fest 2.

So we drove to Brooklyn and back. And I was wasted pretty much the entire time we were in Brooklyn, in our fucking horrible hotel room.

The bands that I'd never heard of were for the most part really fucking good. And it was awesome getting to see the new-old lineup of Devourment, Internal Bleeding, Mortician...

I met the singer of Ben's band since she was doing vocals with Parasitic Extirpation, only briefly though because she was on her way into the ladies room. Nice girl... awesome vocalist.

Went to see Machine Head in Newcastle last night at the student union. Tiny venue and it was awesome, so heavy. The night out after was just as heavy as well, got with the hottest girl of my career thus far, a proper stunning Polish girl. Good times.

Seems we are all doing quite well. :isay: I am doing fairly excellently, myself. Patience pays off it would seem. :huzzah:

One day, perhaps years from now, ALL of the Maplitons will live under the same crazy roof.

It will be called, the Maplitonic Compound.

At least until the feds bust the place up, anyhow.

Nice! Was my evil twin* playing my guitar? Or did he have his funky Blakhart Les Paul?

*The guy looks absolutely nothing like me. People just get mixed up on which bands we're in because of Mallika and both of us having the Gary Kramer 12904893498-fret guitars. And we're both almost equally obsessed with power metal and NES games.

Cool. I completely forgot about Alex, I'll admit. At some point I think either she deleted me from Facebook or I accidentally deleted her, or Facebook just decided to be a dick and defriended us on its own.

Erm nope didn't see any three trillion fret guitars...

It would be neat if at least sometime we met up in like an industrial compound with instruments and recording gear. And alcohol and ramen noodles. And kinda just did her up...

A pointy-headstock'd, Floyded thing, or a more traditional-flavoured design with an extra string? Or "other"?

One of these I think:
http://www.samash.com/7-and-8-string-el ... te407bks-p
http://www.samash.com/7-and-8-string-el ... eec407xxxx

http://www.samash.com/7-and-8-string-el ... -sjp70txxx

I like the LTDs but not the actives. We have a petrucci in the store and it's actually a phenomenal guitar.

But I fucking hate Petrucci.

The actives can be replaced easily enough.

The Tele-shaped LTD wouldn't look out of place anywhere, and the "no inlays" look is classy. I don't know how the neck profile compares to the Eclipse, the LP-shaped one, though. Those, IMO, have comfortable necks, at least the 6-string versions, as they don't have the wide-flat shredder thing going on.

I've played the high end Ernie Ball version of the Petrucci, and I was surprised at how much I liked the thing, even with the super-low action its owner had. And even the color looks nice on that model- but it's still a sig model, and has a shield on the first fret large enough to block a sword with. And you hate Petrucci.

I'm thinking either the tele, or taking my Blacktop tele with dual buckers and a super fat neck and setting it up to play Drop A. Cause that is what I am doing with the 7-string anyway. The seven string just allows me to do Drop A AND still have the other six strings in standard tuning which I am most comfortable with.

Played the Petrucci again today, it's nice but it really isn't 100% for me. The neck is flat on the back which I don't love and ... it's fucking Petrucci.

So maybe the LTD tele. It doesn't look shreddy which is good cause I don't do that. And I will probably swap out the pickups anyway. I am owed a free set of pickups from Mojotone anyway so maybe I'll have them wind me a set.

Drop A? This has me curious- what sort of stuff are you using drop A tuning for?

The LTD Tele does have that going for it in the aesthetics department- it's just a plain finish Tele, which doesn't look out of place anywhere. I'd try and play one first just to make sure, especially if you're going so far as to have pickups custom-wound for you. (How'd you pull that off, by the by?)

That being said, I don't know if this holds true for the 400-series Eclipses, but the 1000 series had an extra-snazzy bridge, nut, and locking tuners. And the 400s are a bit less ostentatious visually, without all the abalone (to say nothing of the quilt finishes on most of the 1000s).

The Petrucci sig models are nice guitars, but leave them to the DT fanbois. I'm indifferent to Petrucci, and I'd feel weird playing one- it's too obviously someone else's guitar. Were I to have a signature model, I wouldn't have an ostentatious graphic or inlay plastered on the thing- it seems to be a turnoff to a lot of people.

Modern pop punk. Think Chunk, No Captain Chunk!/Four Year Strong etc. etc. bands you probably don't listen to (I didn't until I got recruited for the band.)

We carry Mojotone in the store, and I sell the shit out of them. Every one of my underlings has gotten a free set already I am just waiting to decide what I want. I get a lot of free shit it's kinda awesome.

That's pretty much it. It just oozes ostentatiousness.

But I am also hoping to find a FGN guitar, and maybe one of their 7s. Both the above mentioned bands started using them and my bassist and I have been big fans from the start. We are shooting for sponsorships from Mesa and FGN guitars, which evidently aren't all that difficult to get sponsored by. If I already played Mesa (I do) and FGN (I want to) I imagine that would be a little easier.

Well I'll be damned. That's some pretty metallic-sounding guitaring and drumming there. I was unaware that downtuning and double kick drumming had crossed over into pop-punk land. :hypno:

Definitely avoid the Petrucci seven, then. Were it traditional punk, a case could be made for the irony value of the thing. With the more metallic sound, someone might take it seriously and assume that you're just that much of a Dream Theater fan.
