I actually love the way EVH plays, especially rhythm. And his leads also have always struck me as a near-perfect balance between "practices too much" and "likes to party".
Anyhow, Fair Warning is pretty much the one for me. I am considerably less into the poppier/jokier side of them, and don't really like the later non-DLR shit at all. The guitars are pretty much always swell, though.

Shit, Michael Anthony can play something that isn't 8th note roots. Push Comes To Shove has some serious funk.
Can't say I've ever sat down and listened to Fair Warning in its entirety before given my general aversion to Van Halen, but this is a pretty alright record?

I love EVH's playing but the band generally don't click with me... don't like Roth, don't like those backing vocals, don't like Alex's drumming much...
That toan though. Do you like the brown sound even?

Interesting. For a Ballou recoarding though, i don't like the sound of it.
I like the music bits, but find the mix to be needlessly lardy, in a way that takes away from the noise.

Honestly, I never got into these guys before- I found the vocalist really grating back in the '90s/early '00s. He seems to have changed a bit over the years. I heard good things about this record, and it is decent, IMO. Reminds me of both dreampop/shoegaze and doom metal, neither of which are bad things.
