Not what I was expecting. Very Bowie-esque:
That is pretty fucking fantastic, imo.
I get a bit more Lou Reed from it than Bowie, but not cringe-enducing like Lou tends to do to me. This is just swell.

Haven't listened to these foalks in a log time. Kind of quickly worked through some of their more recent stuff and then back to the first one, and now this one:
The guitars don't seem as massive in reality as my memory had them, which is kind of interesting to me. Vocal is massively excessively loud too, which for sure is just the style of the modern era i guess, but still.

Clearly produced/mixed as a response to popularity of the sounds of the above, i always liked this record too, kind of despite itself:
I mean, it just kind of is what it is. Nice west coasty high gain guitars though. Detuned a bit and what, soldanos? As with all things, Youtube fucks the sounds up, but 80% of it is there. Including the again overbearing vocal volume.
I would love to remix pretty much all 90s rock records to be more guitar centric. Bury the vocals, put the drums back just a bit.

Been listening to Marmozets loads the past few days. Saw em for a few songs at Reading and thought they sounded good but never paid much attention. They're a bit like Paramore on crack with way better riffs and guitar tone.
bit heavier..
She pulls off the singing live as well.

Doomulus. Sludge-riffic.

That is a good record, Mr. Geoff.
Here's some live Nine Inch Nails from 1988. It's total '80s synthpop.

It's funny, the guitar sound is so... Iconic? Certainly influential, at any rate, I suppose we remember it being bigger than it really is. Not that it's small, mind.
I actually like the new records; if anything, they're actually sludgier and heavier.
I found this the other day and thought it interesting. The drums are bone dry except for the snare, which is swimming in oceans of '80s verb:
On their own, the guitars do sound pretty damn huge, though less gainy than one might expect. This might be a case of "when everything's big, nothing's big". It's funny, knowing how this thing was made now, from the source, how much the lead tone sounds like a nasty-ass fuzz pedal, even though it's a magic early '70s Marshall.
Dave Jerden wasn't fucking kidding when he said there was an assload of flanger on the bass:

I missed this the first time around. Turns out it's pretty damn good.
