ooOOOooo... the protractor bit looks handy. Is that shit setup so it's already 17cm away approximately between the capsules? I'm curious how important maintaining that distance actually is.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I'm not entirely sure. I suppose it would depend on the size of the mic? I am really curious to attempt ORTF though; everything I've heard sounds pretty fantastic. I just finished wiring up this guy: Not pictured: a second DBX 163X, because, like a record label, it has no ears. Keeps falling out of the rack. The rack kit costs more than the compressor is actually worth so any old rack ears will do. I'm willing to drill the case. It's a one-fader smashbox. Though, I hear when they are modded, they will do a reasonable SSL Master Buss Comp impersonation, albeit with much more limited controls. I think this should serve for home record-making porpoises. (Guitars will be remapp'd, of course. The 11R's fine, but not that fine.)

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Yeah, it kinda does not suck. Re: the Warm 1176, the price floor for a used one seems to be $450. If you're patient, and check Ebay obsessively, one will occasionally pop up, to disappear a couple hours later. You can't build an 1176 that cheap. This was, of course, my method of acquiring one. My ears tell me it's a proper '76, too. Now, I'm only familiar with the UA reissues and the Purple Audio MC77, but this holds up. Build quality is solid; stepped pots for the input and output levels, if that's anything. All the Warm stuff I have seems to be quite well-built. The one place they cheaped out- and they'll happily admit this- is the PSU. The use an OEM 24v line lump rather than an internal supply, and I just can't be arsed to be a snob about a power supply. They work fine. They should have gone with an orange faceplate, though. It would have been proper garish like the Purple Audio ones are. Plus then I'd have 6U of deer hunter orange shit in my rack, and that would be silly.

That is truly glorious. While more orange would be better, the nearly symmetrical halloween-y aesthetic is good too.

The Purple Audio version wins for sheer purpleness, though:

Truly. It is a pain in the dick, and always takes longer than you think it would.

Little known fact - I was employed as a mover in Los Angeles for years. It does not get better if you are getting paid for it.
Still a pain in the dick

We close June 24th, and were gonna have to be out of our condo by June 30th. Talked to the landlord last night, and we're pushing the out date to July 15th. Gives us some major breathing room.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I dropped Super Drummer 2 a while ago because I was sick of the sounds... like really fucking tired of them...
I've been forced to get back into it with the Metal Foundry expansion though and actually, I really like the sounds in this one. And it's can easily do non-br00tz stuff with the right jiggering.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Sup guise haven't checked in here for a while, been quite busy with life in general. My new cover band had our first gig the other day, just 4 songs opening for the singers other band. I really enjoyed it, it's nice gigging songs you actually like rather than the usual tired cover material. Used the other guitarists JCM800 at gig volume and I thought it sounded awful, though. Dunno if it was the speakers (1960 cab) or how it was dialled in but it sounded like a thin emulation of an amp. Either way I don't think I'll be complaining about my Laney any more, it's in another league Oh yeah I'm building a telemaster esquire as well, all the parts should be here this week. Can't wait to get it all built up and hoping the wood staining goes to plan.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
What is the plan/color? I ghettoed up an esquire once, and though it still sits as such and i like it, i have always generally intended to go back in and put a neck pup in. On my normal teles i just use the neck too much. It is the same as an LP Jr though, it just seems like a fantastic idea to make a simple geetar extra simple.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I think the 11R is pretty solid, except I have problems with the cab simulation. Something always seem to sound weird in the upper-mid to high range. I can dial in a pretty solid dual rec sort-of-sound, except for the fucking cab sim.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Have you tried tampering with the impedance at all? I prefer, if memory serves, 32kΩ + cap, for more amp-like sound and feel. Also, I use the parametric EQ on all my gain patches to notch out something in the 6-7k range for pretty much the reason you mentioned. At home, I generally send it to one of the Warms, and that's a solid enough sound for tracking. I split my signal with a Korg DT-10, sending the bypass out to the other Warm, which functions as a really overpriced DI box. Also, I can tell you that my Warwick Corvette --> Sansamp VT Bass --> Warm TB12 --> any compressor in that rack is pretty much instant "sounds like a record" bass tone. I've been meaning to chain the WA76 and Pro VLA II together to see what that'll do, but I've been lazy. WA76 for the 1176-style aggression, Pro VLA II for the smoove LA2A opto thing. I doubt I'd have to do anything to that at all, save for a little EQ, come mix time.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
Current plan is a satin black stain, aged white/parchment pickguard (maybe black later on down the line) and my squier big headstock strat neck with rosewood board for now. I will replace this with a maple one when I can afford it as I prefer the feel to rosewood, and the modern c is a little thin for my tastes. I like a thicker v shaped neck on fenders. Just gonna be a stripped back rock machine. I've gone for a 6 saddle bridge since it's not like it's a normal tele anyway, so I won't lose too much sleep over it not being authentic. Pickup will be an Oil City Wapping Wharf which is tapped and I'm wiring it to a push pull + eldred wiring. I've got the body routed for a neck humbucker in case I feel like I need a neck pickup. Do you prefer the standard tele control layout or reverse control plate? Or indifferent?

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
I am 130% reversed tele plate myself. I need the volume knob to be within pinky finger range of my stubby picking fist. I don't ever need such quick/easy access to the pickup selector.

Re: Blog/tweet about shit in your life here
That was my thought as well, as a single channel map guy it would be useful to have it close I'm sure. This is the body after one coat of stain. Its a little patchy in places, did a 2nd coat last night which improved it somewhat. Gonna do another when I get home this afternoon then get started on the tru oil finish on Friday. I think there's a few patches which could have benefited from better sanding but honestly I was at it for ages so I'm very reluctant to go back and sand it all down again haha. That and I'm far from a perfectionist with this kinda thing so I'm not too bothered.
