Post heard Russian Circles for the first time tonight
WHEN I SAW THEM OPEN FOR BTBAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fuckin Awesome. Totally eclipsed Between the Buried and Me. Whole crowd was bobbing to them, where nobody could follow BTBAM's beats hahaha. Nice gear setup too, Verellen heads and Emperor cabinets, so of course i was rocking a chubby during their entire set. Their tone was... for lack of a better word... savage. Just so raw and awesome.

I am now wearing a Russian Circles tshirt. Amen.

You weren't familiar?

They are awesome. Knowing that they're opening for Between The Buried And Me almost makes me want to go see the latter, who I'm not into, because the former is so damn good.

So fucking good. I dismissed them as an ISIS rip off when I first heard them. I was wrong.

Enjoy this live take of 309 as it is fucking stunning.

Drummer is sooooooo good. Guitars all by themselves with a less creative beatman would make them essentially like 90% of all postrock copycat bands. The drums elevate them to something special, IMO.

Russian Circles' bass tone is fucking immense. The bit in Geneva where it breaks down to just the bass and drums about halfway through is immense.

Shit yeah. :huzzah: It makes me want to know what gear he uses, given my bass gig is in a pretty damn heavy band. I know exactly the bit you're talking about off the top of my head.

I do dig that particular sort of heavy sound whole lot. Them, Isis, some of the Opeth stuff, some of the Tool stuff, some of King Crimson's heavier things, even some noisier things like Last Exit's Iron Path has that vibe to it. A friend of mine once called that "that droney shit Eric listens to". One of the common things I hear in that sort of style is the badassness of the rhythm sections. Every single one of the aforementioned has a great drummer and bassist. That's what keeps that material going, and the guitarists can just go do whatever- and there are some excellent guitar players in those bands.

I believe this is one of the universal bands of this forum. For me its the fluidity, the changes, the build ups and of course the HUGE sound they get out of their instruments. The songs seem to be composed rather then just a bunch of parts that kinda sound good together. I agree with Chris that the main ingredient is the drummer, but not too far off is the thick as fuck bass.

What Snaxie said, down to knowing the bit off the top of my head :huzzah:

I can see that. We have a very broad range of tastes here that span a lot of things. But these guyse do make a noise people can get behind- very much a musician's band, but the crowd here is musicnerds, all of whom enjoy some heavier rocksounds. There's no vocals to get in the way and make a good song suck; it's not too chaotic, unstructured or dissonant to be sketchy for some of us- and there's a big tolerance, even love for noisy here, but we have a few different takes on that flavour. In some ways it's more about what they don't do. I suppose they're like a jam band for people who dig heavy rawk. I am okay with this. :isay:
