It makes me want to know what gear he uses, given my bass gig is in a pretty damn heavy band. I know exactly the bit you're talking about off the top of my head.
I do dig that particular sort of heavy sound whole lot. Them, Isis, some of the Opeth stuff, some of the Tool stuff, some of King Crimson's heavier things, even some noisier things like Last Exit's Iron Path has that vibe to it. A friend of mine once called that "that droney shit Eric listens to".

One of the common things I hear in that sort of style is the badassness of the rhythm sections. Every single one of the aforementioned has a great drummer and bassist. That's what keeps that material going, and the guitarists can just go do whatever- and there are some excellent guitar players in those bands.
